When I started the Rural Energy Freedom project, I was facing a classic beginner’s dilemma. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to build and a garage full of EG4 and Signature Solar equipment, but I had never designed a professional electrical system before. I knew that one wrong calculation on a planset could lead to a rejected permit or, worse, a safety hazard on my roof.
Instead of hiring a local firm for thousands of dollars, I turned to Upwork to find a “safety net.” My strategy was unique: I hired two independent solar designers simultaneously.
The Strategy
I wanted to see if two experts, working independently, would arrive at the same conclusion. I looked for Electrical Engineers with significant experience in residential solar and battery storage. I provided them with:
- My exact component list (the EG4 18kPV, PowerPro batteries, and Talesun panels).
- My proposed roof layout (the 18-4-8 split).
- The specific mounting hardware I wanted to use (SnapNrack TopSpeed).
The Surprising Results
The outcome was better than I ever expected. Both designers—hired from different parts of the world—delivered professional, permit-ready plan sets that were nearly identical. This gave me immediate, 100% confidence that the system was technically sound.
Even more surprising was the cost. By using Upwork, I was able to get two complete, high-quality plan sets for just 1/4 of the total price I had been quoted by a single local design firm. Each provided me with not surprisingly similar plans.
Why It Worked
Beyond the math, these designers provided invaluable advice that I wouldn’t have known as a first-timer:
- Component Verification: They did not include smaller items like Tigo TS4-A-O Optimizers and MC4 connectors, but did confirm through discussions that those would be appropriate for the installation. You want to get as many of the parts in one order, since many distributors have higher shipping charges than Amazon. I felt more comfortable purchasing some of the items through Signature Solar compared to Amazon. Especially the connectors. Don’t get cheap on important connectors to save $50 on a $10,000 solar panel installation. Signature Solar’s support was better during my initial purchases compared to other suppliers. The wait times have increased some, but will depend on the day you call.
- PE Stamp Availability: One of the engineers I worked with even had access to professionals who could provide PE stamps. While I didn’t personally need them for my project, it was a huge relief to know that professional certification was available for only about $150 if my local jurisdiction had required it.
- Permit Success: When I took those plans to the county and my utility, they were impressed by the professional level of detail. The permit process was smooth and fast because the “homework” had been done by experts.
The Lesson for DIYers: Don’t let the “engineering” part of solar scare you off. For a small investment on Upwork, you can have the peace of mind that comes from professional validation, making your first build feel like you’ve done it before.
